What does PK do?

Plankenkoorts does all sorts of things! We are, of course, a windsurfing association, and that means we are all too happy to be on the water as soon as the wind blows. Should it not be windy in the Netherlands, we are also not averse to spontaneously taking a short trip through Europe to places where it ís windy. Aside from windsurfing, we are also huge fans of a day of surfing, wakeboarding (winching), snowboarding, and skiing. Many of our sporty members enjoy being able to stay active even when the wind or wave forecasts are less favorable, which is why we have designated group chats for activities such as running, bouldering, and attending concerts. Additionally, we have many active members who are always up for a game and a drink; the real lifestylers!

We are also always open to trying something new! For instance, our clinics for wingfoiling, stand up paddling, or something completely different like skimboarding are often very popular. At PK, you don't have to be afraid to be enthusiastic about activities that might be a bit further removed from windsurfing or wave surfing. Often enough, there are plenty of people you can pull along, and it might just turn out to be a big success!

What is a furq?

We often use the term ‘furq’ to refer to all first-year students within the association. At Plankenkoorts (PK), we do not use terms like ‘sjaars’ or ‘feut’, which often carry a relatively negative connotation. Quite the opposite, in fact! We prefer to use the word furq primarily to indicate that someone might need a little extra help getting to know the association in an easy and fun way. You won’t remain a furq for your entire life, by the way! After your first year at PK, the name moves on to the next new members, and hopefully, you will be the one to help the inexperienced furqs.

So what are furq groups?

Now that you understand what a furq is, you can probably guess what is meant by a so-called furq group! To help you get started within PK, first-year members are divided into different groups. This way, you don't have to get to know all the furqs right away, but can focus on a familiar furq group for the first period.

Each furq group is paired with two to five mentors. These 'Robbies and Morenos' have been members of the association for quite some time. They will take you to all activities and can explain everything about PK to you. For example ask them where the term Robby’s and Moreno’s comes from!

After a certain period, you will hopefully have gotten to know many first-year members, and it will be time for the well-known Robbygames. This is the day when you get to put together your own furq group and then compete against each other to immortalize the name of your new group on the Robbygames trophy!

Being there is experiencing it

Being there is experiencing it (or more commonly in dutch: ‘Bijzijn is meemaken’) is a quote used by all active members at PK. After all, becoming active is easiest and most fun when you participate in many activities, go surfing often, join a trip, or become part of one of our fun and accessible committees! The craziest things happen during our activities, and you only experience them if you are actually being present. How disappointing would it be if you missed a mosh pit at De Kurk or when someone lands a forward loop on the Valkenburgse meer? But above all, remember: nothing is mandatory within our association, so no one will bat an eye if you miss a session!

Are you thinking: 'Oh, but I really want to get off to a good start and be actively involved right from the beginning!'? Then keep August 27 to 30 (2026) free in your calendar. These are the dates for the introductory camp (Kemka). Certainly not a must, but great fun to experience!

How does PK communicate?

You might be wondering: ‘How do I know when PK activities are taking place? And where are they? And what do they entail?’ Fortunately, there are more than enough ways for members to find out what is on the schedule. If you would like to take a look at the agenda, you can do so via the 'activities' section. For those interested, the calendar can be linked to your own Google/Apple calendar via this page. Furthermore, you can always see banners for upcoming activities on the website's homepage so that you never have to miss anything.

Would you rather plan ahead? At the beginning of every month, the monthly schedule is shared in three places:

• Our Instagram
• The newsletter via E-mail

Fortunately, you are not dependent on seeing a single message every month, as a relevant message will be sent in the PKPromo in the run-up to every activity, and various matters will be brought to attention during the ‘Alpha talk’ at the social gatherings. Should there be any important announcements or notifications, these will often be posted via WhatsApp announcements or as a page on the news feed on the site. The latter is also prominently displayed on the website's homepage.

Aside from all those serious announcements and activities, PK primarily offers a great deal of fun! For instance, our WhatsApp community has plenty of group chats dedicated to topics related to windsurfing, surfing, or all sorts of other things. We also have a guestbook on the website that can be used for any kind of message you can think of. You can use it, for instance, to announce that wind is in the forecast or that exciting activities are coming up, but it is also the place to let people know that you will be eating together at HS or VB.

How does the website work?

The best way to get to know the site is to click around. However, there are a few handy features we would like to highlight here. For instance, you can navigate to a number of important pages in the following way:

You can register for the use of PK buses, surfing/chilling at VB, the use of surfboards, or chilling at HS via the dots at the top of the page. The first dot is always for registering for today, and the second dot is for registering for tomorrow.

PKareer

Every member joins the association at their own time: during their bachelor's or during their master's, with diverse intentions and at different surfing levels. From that starting point, everyone follows their own path. We call this your ‘Pkareer’. Some quickly progress to become the most epic surf boss the association has ever known, while others primarily seek camaraderie or are overjoyed if they can ever just sail back and forth steadily. The most important thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong. Plankenkoorts offers space to develop at your own pace – on the water and off it. So, do you ever want to win the Battle of the Generations? Or is a Schultenbräu in hand enough to make you happy?

Where is PK?

Because we are based in both Leiden and Delft, we have twice as many places to get together! In Delft, we have our storage for members' own equipment, which we call our Homespot (HS). When the wind blows, our 3 buses depart from here towards all the beautiful surf spots in the Netherlands, or even abroad! Apart from the storage, our HS also has a chill-out area where we hold meetings, eat, or play a game together, for example. Additionally, members bring their lunch to HS regularly, perfect if you're in the mood for a hot toasted sandwich! Our teaching center, also known as VB, is located in Leiden. Here too, we can relax nicely in our building next to the water; this is also where the association's equipment is kept and where you, as a beginner, can step onto a board for the first time. But beware: once you have experienced the feeling of planing, you won't want to go back and you will be completely swept up in the sport!

We regularly have drinks every Thursday from 9:00 PM at De Kurk in Delft, but once a month it's time for a home game for our Leiden members. That is, when we have drinks at Café de Keyzer in Leiden.

Some important abbreviations for PK

Students often use a lot of abbreviations and words where it's not surprising that you have no idea what they mean. That's why we have compiled a list of the most important abbreviations within the association here:

• PK = PlankenKoorts
• HS = HomeSpot, our building in Delft (not to be confused with The Hague HS train station)
• VB = ValkenBurgse meer (and of course our beautiful building in Leiden)
• Hoek/HvH = Hoek van Holland
• Wijk(i) = Wijk aan zee
• VP = Vrouwenpolder
• Spot X/OD = Ouddorp haven
• Scheef/Skiffa = Scheveningen
• Brouwers/BD = Brouwersdam
• OV = Oostvoornse meer

Some important terms regarding PK

• PK Golf, PK Bouter en PK Bak= The epic surf buses that take us to the water with our surf gear! Unsure about the name of the bus? The name is always clearly visible on the front of the bus.
• Schaft = Eating with the association
• Radicaal = Like radical surfing, going all out, switching off your brain
• Lomp = Just go without thinking about elegance
• Kieten (kiten) = Well, what can we say about it...
• Furq = New member of Plankenkoorts, so that's you!
• Robby = Male mentor of a furqen group (origin: Robby Naish)
• Moreno = Female mentor of a furqen group (origin: Moreno Sisters)
• Lifestyler = Party animal, someone who doesn't surf (or does) but still has a lot of fun within the association
• Schulti = Half a liter of Schultenbräu, preferably drunk lukewarm.
• Promo = Promotion, how else would you know when all those activities are?
